Open-plan offices, hospitality fit-outs, and retail floors all share the same challenge: getting power and data to the middle of a room without running cables across the floor. A floor outlet box solves this by recessing power, data, and AV connections flush with (or just below) the finished floor — but with so many lid finishes, depths, and capacities on the market, picking the right one isn’t always straightforward.
Here’s what to weigh up before you order.
1. What Floor Are You Installing Into?
Floor outlet boxes are built to suit concrete, timber, or floating floors, and the installation method differs for each. Get this right first — it determines which carcass and bracket type you need, and most boxes come with height-adjustable brackets to accommodate changes in finished floor level during concrete or screed pours.
2. Lid Finish and Style
The lid is the only part anyone sees, so it needs to match the space as well as the foot traffic it’ll handle:
• Stainless steel flush lid — sits level with the floor, the most common choice for offices and retail
• Stainless steel recessed lid — designed to take floor covering (carpet tile, timber) so the lid disappears into the floor
• Stainless steel black lid — same flush/recessed options in a black finish for a different aesthetic
• Brass flush lid — a heritage or premium look for boutique fit-outs
• Plastic lid — a cost-effective option for lower-traffic areas
Most lids include cable exit flaps and bevelled edges, which reduce trip hazards where people are walking over the box regularly.
3. Environment: Do You Need an IP Rating?
Standard floor boxes are designed for indoor, dry environments. If the install is in a covered outdoor area, a wet zone, or anywhere dust and moisture are a factor, step up to an IP-rated floor outlet box — it’s purpose-built to keep moisture and dust out of the power and data connections.
4. Power and Data Capacity
Floor boxes are configurable from a single GPO to 8 auto-switched power outlets, with data, AV, and multimedia module options available. Before you order, map out:
• How many power outlets does the space realistically need
• Whether you need data points (and how many)
• Any AV or multimedia requirements (HDMI, USB-C, etc.)
Undersizing capacity now is harder to fix later than ordering one size up.
5. Depth and Install Type
Depth is usually the deciding factor, and Cableaway covers more ground here than most suppliers:

If the concrete pour is genuinely shallow — a common issue on modern slabs poured thin to save on cost — the FB Series (codes like FBSSF4P4DS50, FBSSF2P6DS50, or the recessed-lid FBSS19R and FBSS14R variants) is purpose-built for exactly this, with an overall height as low as 54mm while still fitting 2–4 power outlets and up to 6–8 data points. The FB145 Series sits just above it at 65mm and is a popular compact option where a smaller footprint matters as much as depth. For higher outlet counts or new-build slabs with more depth to work with, step up to the Endura 64 or 98 Series. For harsh or corrosive environments, the UNEX Floor Box 52 offers a thermoplastic, corrosion-resistant alternative to metal.
6. Don’t Need a Recessed Box? Consider a Pop-Up
For boardrooms, meeting tables, or spaces where you want the outlet to disappear entirely when not in use, a pop-up floor or table box keeps the floor completely clear until it’s needed.
Quick Decision Checklist
• Floor type: concrete, timber, or floating?
• Finish: stainless, black, brass, or plastic?
• Environment: standard or IP rated?
• Capacity: how many power, data, and AV points?
• Depth: ultra-shallow (FB Series, 54mm), compact (FB145, 65mm), or higher-capacity (Endura 64/98)?
Still Not Sure?
Specifying the wrong floor box after the slab is poured is an expensive mistake to fix. Cableaway’s team can help you match the right configuration to your project before you order.
